The Yamaha XJ900F is/was classed as a Sports Tourer , probably because of its power , I don't believe you lose to much through the shaft.
I bought it in September 97 (after dropping the last one) its a 1992 model and had 11,500 miles , as of writing it has gone passed the 32,000 mark. Like the newer Divvie it is not the worlds best looking bike , but as an all rounder it is/has been ideal for me and my wife.
The 900 motor is tough and powerfull , it give 92bhp , and when used in the power range can give the sporty smaller bikes a run for thier money. Its handling on corners leaves a lot to be desired though , it has a tendancy to skip . The front springs are soft as standard and so far I have only added a touch more oil to compensate , I will probably be getting new springs soon and I have already replaced the rear shocks with Progressive ones.
As a commuter I use every day to commute to Manchester ( or jean pinches it to go to Liverpool) . After 2 winters it still starts first time no matter what the weather. Even when I put the side panniers on it is still thin enough for decent filtering.
As a tourer we have been up to Scotland on it a couple of times (still yet to make John O'Groats though) . Also down south and to various rallies . It is comfy one up or two up , I find numb bum kicks in around 150 miles but by then I may be looking for a fuel stop anyway. It will cruise all day at 90 or 100.
Economy , I get between 45 - 50 mpg constantly and 55mpg if I just pootle along. The tank range is over 200 miles , I have made 195 before reserve on a long run (with a gallon in reserve) a couple of times but more normal is arount 170. Tyres usually come in at 8000 miles and I get it serviced every 4000 at a cost of ?100 , not so much because it needs it but more because I can afford it and depend on it so much.
Overall I rate it far higher than the newer Diversion due to its higher power , better MPG and looks . The only bike I would currently swop it for is a FJ1200
